Featured Animal of the Month (December, 2007): Meet the mighty Matabuey, aka, the Ox Killer. In Central and South America, one of the most elusive animals is the Bushmaster, the world’s largest pitviper reaching lengths of 9 feet. Our resident female was captive born in 2007 and is now around 4′. She’s a beautiful creature but one that deserves the ultimate in respect. Lachesis stenophrys is native to Central America. Very few people have ever seen a wild bushmaster and we are very fortunate to have a trio of these rare animals at the WDC. A big thanks goes to Dr. Earl Turner for donating his pair of bushmasters, Lachesis muta - also known as South American Giant Bushmasters. We are collaborating with Dr. Rodrigo Souza who is working with the Atlantic Coast Bushmaster of Brazil which is in peril due to habitat destruction. Dr. Turner will also be involved in this unique partnership to help find ways to save this species. More to come so stay tuned.
